Genuine Fractals vs. Interpolation

Another interesting experiment with Genuine Fractals was to take a low resolution image, in this case a shot taken with my old Fuji DX-5 at VGA resolution and blow that up to 10" x 8" to see the results.

I have here zoomed in to a small area of the image at it's original resolution and at the interpolated resolution. As you can see the interpolated version is, not surprisingly, very soft:-

Original Resolution
Interpolated resolution

Doing the same with Genuine Fractals produced a very different result:-

Original Resolution
Fractal Compression

The fractally compressed and re-rendered image is almost as soft as the interpolated version, but there is no evidence whatsoever of the original pixellation. It is worth pointing out though, that whilst the interpolation took just a few seconds, rendering the fractal image took over an hour on my 166 MHz Pentium, far longer than the higher resolution images.
